Dear Editor-and-Chief,
I
am concerned with a recent topic that seems to be overlooked at a government
level. More government officials are opening up to the idea of legalizing
marijuana for medicinal use, but are still neglecting the fact that it can also
be used to make many other useful things as well. Marijuana should be legalized
as a material used to make goods and potentially take some of the strain off of
our economy.
Marijuana
has various purposes. The buds can be used for medicine, but the clippings and
left over parts are used to make a substance known as hemp. Hemp has over ten
thousand uses including paper, concrete, clothes, fuel etc. Hemp is very cost
efficient and quicker to produce than many plants. On average, marijuana takes
anywhere from three to six months to grow. If legalized, hemp can bring in 50
to 500 million dollars to the economy.
Sincerely,
Devin Cheetham

The foundation for hemp
For
hundreds of years, marijuana has been used to produce multiple goods in almost
every part of the world. The cannabis plant was used to make paper as well as
stronger material such as clothing and building material; however, in 1911, the
United States government banned the plant in fear of it possibly reforming the
economy and eliminating many of the jobs created by paper and other companies.
At the time, many politicians and business owners felt threatened by the
popularity and low production cost of cannabis, and felt that if people kept
replacing goods with this plant, there will be no need for many of the jobs
required at the time. Marijuana can be used for over 50,000 different products,
which is why it should be legalized.
Marijuana
plants consist of three useful parts. The plant has the buds, which are used
for consumption, and then the stem and the leaves which are used to produce
hemp. Hemp can be strong enough to make a concrete solution, but can also be
used to make flexible materials such as clothing, nets, and laces (many uses of
cannabis).
About one
hundred years ago, textiles including sails, nets, rope, flags, and sealants
were made of hemp because companies found the plant to be financially
convenient and faster to produce. Actually, according to Cannabis Campaigners’,
approximately 90 percent of textiles were made of hemp. Soap and other necessities were also made of
hemp during the 1800’s and before.
Hemp
can contribute millions of dollars by being used as a resource for everyday
necessities. If made legal, cannabis has the power to drastically change our
economy. With the rapid advancement of technology, it is important to find more
efficient and affordable ways to live by replacing harmful pollutants with a
safer, more productive ingredient known as cannabis. It is possibly the key to
reducing America’s debt and opening the door for a healthier planet.

Let Me Speak
Republicans are red
Democrats are blue
They pay me no mind but I want to help you
I’m easy to grow in almost any
condition
And turned into thousands of things not
to mention
Fuel that can be used to take you up the street
Maps and contracts and documents and deeds
Even the laces that are tied to your feet.
I wish they knew all the things I could
do
Instead there’s just silence because
they don’t have a clue.
Knock knock bang thud open the door
America cant afford to be blind anymore.
I can help if they let me have a say
But ignorance is bliss in the U S of A.
I want to talk I need to speak
The fabric I make is far from weak.
Legalize me so I can be used
And the people that don’t are only fools.
God put me on this earth so I can make a change
The people against me are quite deranged.
I’M JUST A PLANT I do know harm
But yet I’m still illegal to farm.
These that think I should be band
Will fight against me all that they can.
I catch the eye of everyone around
Form city to city from town to town.
My sharp color and pretty levees
Can make the fabric of your sleeves.
LET ME SPEAK I scream and shout
But I’m just a plant that’s not cared
about.
I try to help I really do
If you heard of all benefits would you
help too?
